Except when you have 200 pounds of peaches all ripening at the same time! We here in Cloverdale, are blessed with an exceptional climate – warm to hot during the summer days and cool, often foggy, at night. The wine grapes love it, and so does my garden. The vegetable and fruit trees are in full swing right now with all my edible plants racing to the finish line in a mad frenzy of growing, flowering, pollinating, and ripening. When I walk through the garden at night, I SWEAR I can hear growing noises.

“When the fruit is ripe, it will drop.” – But not if the tree falls over first!

Case in point, my beautiful little white peach tree: normally a proud and pretty specimen, standing 15 feet tall and 15 feet wide with lovely balanced branches. There it sits, huddled over like Quasimodo, so loaded with fruit it can barely stir a branch in the gently summer breeze.

OK, I admit that every day (sometimes more often) I walk by the tree, feel for the ripest fruit, and then eat one while standing by the tree – just to make sure they’re not getting too ripe. Any day, we’ll be picking fruit. Then comes the peach pepper jam, peach chutney, peach parfaits, peach pies and peach smoothies as we (and our guests) bravely try to consume or preserve every last peach before they spoil. I can’t wait.
